Broken Ground

When I first arrived in Australia back in 2003 I imagined trekking off into the desert, my mind full of the classic (to Europeans anyway) Australian landscape of red rock and blue sky. In fact, what happened was that I went for a weekend's bushwalking up in the Grampians and found the landscape so surprising and inspiring that I haven't been much further afield since. The Victorian bush covers gorges, hilltops, and old mine workings and ranges from deep green rainforest in the Otways to brittle glaucous rattling gum forests in the Goldfields. All of it is chaotic, messy and doesn't lend itself to landscape picture-making in the traditional sense. So I don't try. My bushwalking paintings have a large element of rhythm in them, which is to do with capturing the landscape "on the hoof" rather than sitting down and glaring at a nice view. Mostly made in the studios from quick studies and photographs, the paintings are as much about what it feels like to move through the forests and across the hillsides as they are about what they look like.
